18 Jun North East Company Is Amongst First to Provide Free WiFi Outdoors

An award winning North East based company is one of the first to provide free WiFi access to the public in an outdoor space in the UK.

KBR, an Official Supplier of The Tour of Britain, is providing its ground breaking mobile WiFi solution – Konnectifi – in a bid to get more people involved in cycling and The Tour of Britain, the biggest professional cycling race in the UK.

The event organisers, SweetSpot Group – a well-known sports events and marketing company – have welcomed KBR as an official sponsor of their elite cycling events.

Alastair Grant, Commercial Director of SweetSpot, said: “The way in which people engage in sport is changing, rapidly. We are proud to be working in partnership with KBR to provide a way for even more people to get involved in sport, and share the feelings and news of the day with a global audience.

Creating a sense of excitement and engagement around a major national event like this is extremely important and the Konnectifi solution from KBR will help us to enable this.”

The free public access WiFi solution will allow spectators to log on, connect, Tweet and email during live sports events. With this innovative new technology, which was first piloted at the recent Pearl Izumi Tour Series in Durham, the event organisers can engage more closely with spectators.

Robin Price, Managing Director of KBR said: “This is a momentous occasion. People no longer just expect WiFi, they expect it for free no matter where they are, and we are giving venue owners, be that shopping centres, hoteliers or even outdoor event managers, the means to provide that free WiFi access.

The Tour of Britain is the country’s largest free-to-spectate live sporting event, and we hope that by providing free access to WiFi, we encourage more people to get involved in this great sport.”

KBR, which is now preparing for the biggest event The Tour of Britain in September, will be celebrating 30 years in business in November and specialises in the design and build of innovative wireless networks.
